Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay began to develop her creative and artistic side when she was a young girl because of her Aunt Denise. Her aunt was a nurse and worked night shifts so that she could devote her days to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's examples of how art could serve as an instrument for activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother who was a social sassy and instilled DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay was raised together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay would use the summers she spent in Alabama as inspiration for her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay began producing in broadcast journalism when she was still at university. She began as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to watch the home of one of the members of the jury and go through their garbage. Due to her duties she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism and moved into the business of publicity. DuVernay was hired right from college to be a junior publicist at an unassuming studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations. In addition to PR, the company established several lifestyle platforms such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
